The ASPCA’s poison control center has deemed the plants that are detailed on the following pages to be’safe’ for planting in locations that are frequented by dogs and other pets. These pages contain a list of those plants.
Please be aware that the responses of different animal species and even breeds to the many compounds that can be present in plants can vary. Although the following plants should not cause serious or fatal poisoning, we do not recommend that you let your pet play with or consume any portions of these plants. This is because these plants contain potentially toxic chemicals.

Acorn Squash

- It is a winter squash that is easy to grow from seed.
- Can be included in the diets of both dogs and owners – delicious baked or roasted.
- The seeds can also be eaten – they are best toasted.
- Squash are vine plants that grow best on ‘hills’ or mounds of soil. These should be spaced roughly six feet apart.
- Plant 5-6 seeds on each hill, one inch deep in the soil. Sow seeds directly into the soil 3-4 weeks after the last frost.
- The squash will be ready to harvest after 80-90 days and should be ‘cured’ in a warm dry place such as a garage for a week or so before eating.
