Learn More About Different Feline Breeds 2021: The Unique Appearance Of A Burmese Cat

Gordon Russell describes a cat of colorpoint color, but with significant differences from the Siamese: snow-white “socks” on all four paws, long hair and magnificent fluffy tails, which they usually wore on their backs “in a squirrel manner.” The eyes are blue, deep, melancholy-affectionate when the cat is calm, but wild and glowing when she is angry.

It does not matter to whom the description belongs, it does not matter whether he saw the sacred Burma or only dreamed of it. But, having materialized, our Burmese are remarkably similar to their portrait of almost a century ago! Now they, as, by the way, and the Siamese, have new colors, but the Burmese have not turned into light and thin ones.

They are strong cats with a slightly stretched body, strong bones and strong limbs of medium length. Silky wool, remaining short on the muzzle and limbs, begins to “grow in height” on the cheeks, gradually forming a luxurious collar (“frill”), on the body it is semi-long and even long. But the undercoat is small. Burma’s tail still resembles a luxurious plume; however, the squirrel habits have diminished, and they often wear it not on the back, but simply raised.

Burmese Beauty

I do not want to delve into the most beautiful legend that hovers around this breed. Those who wish can easily find it on the Internet. Alas, there is little room for romance at the judging table. Today we’ll talk about this amazing beauty with bright blue eyes, fur, snow-white in body, with a magnificent frill, with … Well, let’s start in order.

Colors

At the moment you can admire 20 colors of Burmese cats. True, I will immediately note that not all organizations recognize more than 4 basic colors, seal, blue, chocolate and lilac points. Relatively new colors (red, cream, tabby, cake and torby point) are recognized by European organizations (WCF, FIFe) and some American ones (TICA, ICE).

Regardless of the color in which the points of this beauty are painted, and they also have completely clear boundaries, “gloves” are needed – white marks on the paws. The white toes on the forelegs should only cover the toes, ending in a straight line at the angle of the leg-toe joint. But on the hind limbs – rise a little higher, forming arrows (spurs) on their back surface, reaching the middle or 2/3 of the shin length. The white color should not extend above the hock.

Oh, how hard it is to determine if the kitten is “painted” correctly! Kittens are born absolutely white, and the color begins to appear only by the month, and what can we say about gloves!

Fur

Oh, Burma has a very special one: tender, light, airy. Around the neck, there is an adorable collar that turns into a frill on the chest, and on the legs, there are piquant panties. The tail is like an ostrich feather. Oh yeah! Burma is like that … if you take care of your wool. Sometimes I see owners who are completely sure that if nature has awarded pets with such a wool texture, then nothing needs to be done with it. They are absolutely wrong! “Live”, mobile, fluffy wool can only be achieved with daily care!

Burmese Cat’s Color Is Overgrown

An interesting feature of Burma: kittens are born completely white. Breeders love to watch the color-point pattern gradually “emerge” like the sympathetic ink drawing used in the olden days for secret messages. It looks like a blank sheet of paper, but if you hold it over a candle – a map of the treasure island … When the kittens are a few days old, the first, still very slight, darkening “hatches” on the nose and ears. As the kittens grow, the points become more pronounced. The color of the kitten is already visible, later – the shape of the white markings on the paws.

According to the experience of birders, points and “socks” are formed more quickly in classic forces and blue colors, and more slowly in chocolate and lilac kittens. And if the color is light, and even tabby, it will fully open in a year, or even one and a half.

At an older age, color points often develop unwanted darkening of the body, and contrast is lost. In a number of catteries they successfully cope with this deficiency, and 12-14-year-old cats retain color contrast.

Gloves, Boots And Spurs

The Sacred Burma is the only breed that must be worn with white “stockings” (socks, boots, gloves), and not the first ones that come across, but of a certain size and shape and, preferably, symmetrical! It is considered chic when a neat shoe has a clear border at the base of the toes. And on its hind legs, it is equipped with spurs. The spur is a narrow white wedge that rises along the back of the metatarsus to 1/2 or 2/3, before reaching the hock, of the same length on both legs. If these white markings do not meet the standard, the animal is left without a title … There is nothing to be done: according to legend, it was they, together with the sapphire eyes, were given to Burmese cats along with the right to be called “sacred”.

But there should be no white marks on other parts of the body!

Burmese Riddle

Here is one of the Burmese mysteries: most likely, none of your Burmese ancestors saw – at least in their last life – the mysterious Khmer temples to which the “legend of the breed” dates back, but the cat reveals an incomprehensible attraction to the golden path. Sacred Burmese avoid extremes in everything: in movement, in food, in communication. They are rarely intrusive, tactful and have a pleasant manner of “talking”. Yes, sociable – but with their own. In a situation when “strangers are allowed into the temple”, cats will show a cautious interest, but they will not turn around the guests and beg for affection. They will just keep the situation under control, especially if they feel that the visit of strangers has dramatically changed your emotional state.

Burmese are tolerant and peaceful, while they are very strong, sturdy cats and can fend for themselves. Excellent jumpers and acrobats – they play with pleasure without turning the apartment upside down. They, of course, cannot withstand so much contemplative reclining as the Persians, but the continuous activity of the Siamese is not to their liking. Even the number of kittens in Burmese litters is moderate, almost like some wild relatives.

Little Burmese find masters without problems. Breeders should, in theory, be satisfied – kittens do not stay too long, go to good homes. There is a certain circle of people who fell in love with this breed, but … They take Burma for themselves, for the house, for the family, absolutely not intending to participate in felinological life. There are not many enthusiasts who want to work with the breed – exhibit, breed competently. Someone does not even suspect about their breeder talents, someone prefers a simpler breed. Burma demands knowledge of genetic subtleties and breed lines, intuition, and elementary luck, finally. Paraphrasing the song of the three Musketeers from the Russian film of the same name, we can say: “What is a breeder without love and what is a breeder without luck?”

Let’s wish all the breeders of this wonderful breed good luck, including in increasing their own ranks!

The Body Structure Of The Cat

Head

Massive, wide, rounded lines. Full, round cheeks – you just want to cuddle for them. It seems, not only to me, because at exhibitions such chubby (literally direct heirs of the Persians) no, no, yes, they are. But excuse me, you can’t call such a cat Burma anymore. Burmese cats have a different head!

A bias to the other side is a “dry” Siamese head, which looks even worse. A competent breeder should remember that the ideal combination of head length and width is 5: 4!

The forehead of a thoroughbred Burmese is slightly convex. Slightly! It shouldn’t look like the cat has a “big bump all over its forehead.”

What we punish, for example, the British, for Burma, the most important feature is the “Roman” nose. This spicy detail is dictated by the developed cartilage at the base of the nasal dorsum. Now, if it is not developed – ah, ah, a straight profile – this is not at all what the sacred Burma needs. The chin should be strong. An undershot meal is not allowed.

Ears

Medium in size, rounded. It would always be like this! Sometimes you look at a kind of “donkey cat” and think, well, everything is wonderful with her, but the ears, towering overhead Himalayan peaks, and unlike the natural landscape, spoil the whole picture.

Eyes

Rounded, bright, blue, and preferably blue at all. Eyes of a different color will not allow the cat to get the title. And the kitten gets an excellent mark.

When you look into those deep, bright blue eyes, it seems as if the sky is reflected in them. The sky, where, as the ancient legend says, the Burmese god is sure to wait for every cat at the end of his earthly journey.

Body

Sacred Burma is an animal of medium size, strong, harmonious and proportional constitution. The body is strong, muscular, slightly elongated and squat, well developed, moderately well-fed, but not massive, with a well-developed chest. The limbs are of medium length, the paws are wide. The back is straight. Burmese cats are approximately the same physique as Thai cats.

We asked: can respected breeders sketch a collective portrait of a person who comes to buy a Burmese kitten?

And this portrait was given to us on the fly, without hesitation – there were no contradictory statements. If any of our guests had clarifications and additions, they were smoothly included in the overall picture.

The breeder is usually called by a woman. She is married, very often the family already has children. The animal is taken with the approval (and not just the consent) of the man and not at the initiative of the child, but for himself. Interestingly, both spouses want a cat of this particular breed. When deciding to start a sacred Burma, they managed to read about her character, exterior features, and even know many colors. That is, they are well prepared, they know what they want, and made a deliberate decision. They are well educated, active and well-to-do people. Age? Most often – from 30 to 40 years old.

Such owners are very happy with the sacred Burma. She likes a friendly family. If there are other animals in the house, so much the better! Who, in the opinion of Burma and her breeders, will not suit a cat is a lonely person, very busy at work. This is confirmed by foreign breeders. Paula Boroff wrote: “Burmese usually do not like being the only animal in the house. This is because they are naturally sociable, and if their human companions go about important business during the day, they languish in loneliness. They are usually picky – is their four-legged companion with another Burmese, a different breed of cat, or “just a cat” or a dog. Various people took Burmese from us and returned a few months later to add another kitten to their family. ” A small flock of Burmas, waiting for you to come home from work, feels quite comfortable. However, it cannot be ruled out that in this case, the presence of someone who can get caught a couple of times or look into a cup will be welcomed by cats. Yes, a loved one (and for each Burmese this role can be played by a member of the family) runs somewhere, but the presence of “calm two-legged” creates a feeling of environmental stability …
