Bath time : How to prepare the bath
Animals usually lick themselves to clean up but not hedgehogs. Even though they are clean animals that don’t smell, they still need a bath from time to time.
If you have an active hedgehog in a wheel or ball, you know that he won’t take the time to do his business is his litter. He will walk in his excrement without even thinking about it.
You can either let your hedgehog soak his feet for a few minutes or give him a full bath. The best place to do so is in the kitchen sink. High and slippery, your hedgehog will have a hard time escaping during his bath.
Fill up the sink with lukewarm water. When the water reaches his belly, it’s a good time to stop the water. Make sure that all windows are closed and that you can’t feel any breeze. In the water, add 2 or 3 drops of olive oil. It will hydrate his skin, especially in winter.
Let him explore this new environment. A normal reaction will be for your hedgehog to get up on his back legs and try to escape. Bath time isn’t always fun for hedgehogs. You have to talk to him and try to calm him down. Your animal will recognize your voice.
It is very important not to put water in his eyes or ears. With time, he will learn not to put his nose in the water. After a few sneezes, he will keep his head above water.
Drop some water onto his back and put 1 or 2 caps of shampoo. Brush slowly with the toothbrush. Always brush from head to back.
To rinse your hedgehog, put him under the tap with lukewarm water. Start with the head and go down slowly towards his tail. Rinse more than once to make sure the shampoo is all gone.
Cover your hedgehog with the towel and keep him warm in your arms for a while.
If you want to soak his feet, put 1 centimeter of lukewarm water at the bottom of the sink and let him walk for a few minutes. You can add some gentle soap if you think he smells bad.
Bath time : Frequency
Use your best judgment to decide when your hedgehog needs to be washed. You can soak his feet many times a week. If your hedgehog seems to be sick, wait before giving him a bath. If the temperature is too cold, wait for warmer days. Don’t deprive a hedgehog that loves water to take his bath. You can spoil him by giving him a bath every week.
