Dog Lure Coursing For Italian Greyhounds

Lure coursing is a sport created specifically for the runners of the canine kingdom: the sight-hounds. Italian Greyhounds are perfect for this sport and they love it.

Two major organizations in the sport of lure coursing are the American Kennel Club (AKC) and the American Sighthound Field Association (ASFA). Both organizations offer competitions and titles for Italian Greyhounds. Titles awarded by the ASFA require higher point earnings than those of the AKC, so they are more difficult to earn. In AKC competition, dogs can earn a top score of 50 with a score of 25 considered to be successful. To receive a title in the ASFA competition, dogs must earn 100 points and have two previous first-place wins or one first place and two second-place wins. The Saluki Club of America also holds lure coursing trials and also the United Kennel Club holds lure coursing trials.

The American Sighthound Field Association (ASFA) began the first trials in 1972. Essentially, lure coursing is dog racing with a simulated rabbit or other prey animal used as a lure. Generally, the lure is a white plastic bag or a strip of rabbit fur, which is pulled by a rope and pulley system. Amateur lure coursing is popular with owners of Italian Greyhounds, Salukis, retired racing Greyhounds, and Afghan Hounds. You can train your Italian Greyhounds for lure coursing using almost anything that attracts his attention. There are local organizations that have open practices for lure coursing.

Because Italian Greyhounds lose all common sense when chasing prey, it’s important that you take precautions to keep your lure courser safe. Be sure the field is clear of gopher holes and any other hazards that may trip and injure your Italian Greyhound. Lure coursers are also at risk of being entangled in the rope-and-pulley mechanism that pulls the lure. Be sure the operator is experienced and takes full safety precautions. Lure coursing Italian Greyhounds can also pull or strain muscles or even break bones by overexerting themselves, so always warm up your dog before participation.
